Welcome to another edition of IntelePeer’s Tech Tuesday series. This week Rebecca Alexander, Mid-Market Account Manager, walks us through her inspiration, appreciation, and advice for the tech industry.

1. What first got you interested in working in technology?

From the time I can remember I’ve been a huge fan of Gene Roddenberry. As a little girl, I looked forward to watching Star Trek with my dad every week. Technology aboard the Starship Enterprise was fascinating at the time. I never imagined I would personally experience anything like it in my lifetime. As a small child, I was in awe of the technology used in sickbay and how Lt. Uhura could hear communications through her earpiece.

I often think about all the advances we have today in technology, and how forward-thinking Gene Roddenberry was for his time. I dream about accomplishing the impossible. I strive daily to push past naysayers, because you never know what is coming next in the awesome world of technology. I am grateful I have the privilege to work in and be a part of the tech industry.

2. What AI or machine learning capabilities are you most looking forward to?

I am most looking forward to how AI and machine learning capabilities may assist in medical research. Its potential could be limitless. I envision algorithms and AI could aid in finding a cure for cancer.

3. What was the most challenging aspect of your career and how did you overcome it?

The most challenging aspect of my career is the volume of information I need to process in any given day. I like to think I am an organized person, although it takes more than that to be successful.

I have a saying I heard from a mentor many years ago, “when I’ve done my best, I can await the results in peace.” I align every day this way, and it just works for me.

4. Any advice for women who want to join the tech industry?

Go for it. Always pursue your dreams and never, never give up.

5. What advice would you give your younger self who is just starting in the workforce?

The first thing that comes to mind is to relax and remain calm. I know this is easier said than done. Respect your working hours, then, once complete, find time to enjoy your hobbies, friends, family, etc. Learn to be 100% present on the job. At the end of the day be sure to leave “it” on your desk until the next day.

Bonus: Who is your tech role model?

Hands down my favorite tech role model is Annie Easley, Rocket Scientist, Computer Scientist, and Mathematician. She held a career at NASA for thirty-four years, starting in 1955 until she retired in 1989.
