Welcome to another edition of IntelePeer’s Tech Tuesday series. This week Nicole Pabon, QA Engineer, narrates her early ambition for the tech field, how AI (Artificial Intelligence) will continue to improve our industry, and her career challenges and solutions.
1. What first got you interested in working in technology?
My uncle was deeply passionate about technology. After we moved out of Puerto Rico he lived with my family for years. He helped raise me. He always told me technology is the future and that I was going to be the first woman in our family to work in the tech field.
When I turned eighteen, I worked for a tech company starting as a receptionist knowing I would work my way up. It was there that I was given the chance to work as a software tester, and I have fallen in love with it since. I am so glad that before my uncle passed away, I was able to fulfill this passion he instilled in me.
2. What AI or machine learning capabilities are you most looking forward to?
AI is going to start revamping speech recognition. Meaning our smart assistants will be better at their jobs. In the future, AI could support smarter virtual assistants through improved accent recognition, controlling background noise, and high-end natural language processing.
3. What was the most challenging aspect of your career and how did you overcome it?
The most challenging aspect of my career was gaining trust from colleagues, being that I was so young. I started in the tech field at only 20 years of age, so I had to prove my capabilities a lot. I always knew my potential, so confidence is what helped me overcome it, as well as my dedication.
4. Any advice for women who want to join the tech industry?
Just do it. We are capable of so much. Do not give up, and do not let anyone or anything intimidate you. You got this!
5. What advice would you give your younger self who is just starting in the workforce?
I would tell myself to focus and keep working hard. Do not let intimidation distract you.
Bonus: What podcast are you currently listening to?
The Woman in Tech Show with Edaena Salinas is an excellent podcast.
